Buck Global Wellness survey results

The results of our second global survey have been released. Significant trends are revealed, not least in the growing number of organisations recognising the connection between wellness in the workplace and employee retention, engagement and productivity.

Traditionally we have all mainly focused our attention on the 20% of any typical workforce who have the need to use health-related benefits in any year – and mainly lived in the hope that the remaining 80% of the population would do whatever was necessary to prevent ill health occurring. The survey reveals that, in the UK, employers are developing programmes to help all employees – in the interest of improved attendance, improved engagement and improved productivity/presenteeism. Furthermore, when questioned about the impact of wellness programmes, respondents commented that the top two impacts that had been felt were around engagement/morale and attendance.

Certainly there are barriers to developing a wellness strategy, with limited staffing and limited budget being the most likely quoted hindrances. However, our experience has shown that it is possible to self fund at least some elements of a wellness strategy by improved efficiency within the spend on the traditional benefit items associated with healthcare. Taking a more integrated approach to the management and procurement of these benefits can often release valuable savings for investment elsewhere.

At Buck we appreciate that there may well be something of a new lexicon to learn and that some of the concepts of a wellness strategy may be new to you. In these days of even more need for organisational efficiencies and cost management, it is clear that wellness in the workplace has an important part to play. We will be in touch with all our clients to discuss the survey results in more detail – but please contact your usual consultant if you would like to arrange an immediate discussion.
